Download speed measures how fast your device can pull data from a server on the internet.
This is the most common metric users care about because it affects almost everything you do online.
Why it matters: faster download speeds allow you to stream 4K video without buffering,
load complex webpages instantly, and download large software or game updates in minutes instead of hours.
It is measured in Megabits per second (Mbps).
Upload speed measures how fast your device can send data to the internet. While often slower
than download speed on residential connections, it is becoming increasingly important for modern remote work.
Why it matters: You need good upload speed for clear video calls (Zoom, Skype, Teams),
backing up files to the cloud (Google Drive, iCloud), and live streaming your gameplay to platforms
like Twitch or YouTube.
Latency, or "Ping," is the reaction time of your connection. It measures the time (in milliseconds)
it takes for a signal to travel from your device to a server and back.
Why it matters: Low latency is critical for real-time activities. In online gaming,
high ping causes a delay between clicking a button and seeing the action happen. In video calls,
it causes that awkward "talking over each other" delay.
Jitter measures the consistency or stability of your latency over time. Ideally, your ping
should stay the same number. Jitter represents the variance or fluctuation in that number.
Why it matters: Even with a fast speed, high jitter can ruin your experience.
It causes "stuttering," choppy audio, or sudden freezes in video calls and online games, often
referred to as "rubber-banding" or lag spikes.
Data travels across the internet in small bundles called "packets." Packet loss occurs when some of
these bundles fail to reach their destination intact. It is usually caused by network congestion or poor hardware.
Why it matters: This is arguably worse than slow speed. Packet loss causes glitches,
corrupted file downloads, robotic-sounding voice calls, and characters "teleporting" around in online games.
This is the most common confusion in networking. Internet speeds are measured in Megabits (Mbps),
while file sizes are usually measured in Megabytes (MB).
The Math: There are 8 bits in 1 byte. This means if you have a "100 Mbps" internet plan,
your actual maximum file download speed is roughly 12.5 Megabytes per second (100 ÷ 8). Understanding
this difference helps manage expectations.
